Men wearing make up is more common than ever, thanks to the rise of male beauty bloggers and men being featured in campaigns. Today we chat to Arron, a 24 make up lover, who has gracefully shared his thoughts and opinions on the increasing rise of men wearing make up.

Thanks Arron for talking to me today. Men have been wearing make up for 1000’s of years, however it is still seen as somewhat as a taboo subject. Would you say British men are ready to embrace make up?
I really do think so to be honest. Guys have always wanted to be seen as the ‘macho man’ or the ‘alpha male’, and for some reason the concept of a guy putting make up on used to make people think the opposite of them things. I think make up on men is now being seen as more of a social norm, with the younger generations because of the rising popularity of Reality TV shows such as, Geordie shore, Towie and EXOTB (Ex on the beach) etc.
With that in mind, do you believe the younger generations of males are more to make up? Specifically, in the LGBT+ community as well?
Definitely! I think with most gay men they will have a bit of concealer or a bit of bronzer, they may not admit it but most of them will have!
What are your own experiences with make up?
I tend to have two types of ‘make up days’, ones where I use BB cream and concealer for the days I’m either going out, or I just look incredibly rough. But most days I just moisturise, translucent power, and bronzer. Some days I may fill in my brows depending on if I’ve had them done. I use make up to cover my eczema scars.
Why do you wear make up?
I wear it to cover my skin discolorations mainly. My eczema marks and bags.
When was it you first discovered make up?
I used to sneak into my mums make up bag as a kid and do a full face of make up, mascara, eyeshadow – the works. Then when I became like 18, I went through an awkward few months of eyeliner usage. Then at 20, I started wearing concealer to cover my spots. Since the concealer I have added to my collection.
I did the exact same thing! Would you say there was an interest in make up from an early age (before 18)?
I don’t think I was interested in it, just curious about it and wanted to do what my mum did! It comes full circle now because she robs stuff from my stash now!

As you’re getting older, has you’re make up choices/style become braver, bolder?
Not really to be honest, I think I’m somewhat still ashamed of the make up usage. There’s days that I’ll put my face on then look in the mirror and wipe some of it off with tissue haha
That’s what we want to get past, wear it as you want! Do you think that is a common feeling amongst men, that they shouldn’t be wearing it?
I don’t know if it’s just my insecurities, that make me feel that way! I have friends who go out with a full face’s on and don’t give a damn!
What would you say to anyone thinking about wearing make up, but isn’t sure how to go about it?
Go for it! It isn’t permanent, it can be applied as lightly or as heavily as you want. Go for it and have fun!
Today they are tons of beauty bloggers and influencers who are male, working with huge brands such as MAC and Benefit, along with world famous male make up artists, do you think they have helped within the topic of men and make up?
Definitely, I think Jeffrey Star has helped massively when it comes to make up for men. I watch make up videos as I find them interesting and I think I found/find inspiration and I think I found/find inspiration from them as they are so OTT, with their own make up and still they’re accepted within the community.
And finally, what are your 3 products you can’t live without?
Bronzer, definitely! A brown eyeshadow for jaw contour and a translucent powder.
